Doge Durango will not start

Dodge Durango will not start diagnostic procedures.

A long time customer had their Dodge Durango towed in to our shop today with a no start problem. The customer complaint was this: No start. No crank. The starter will only click and then all of the shift indicator lights come on.

Our first step will be to see if the problem has set any engine trouble codes and caused a check engine light to come on, if we are lucky, we will be able to pull a code after scanning.

A no start on a Durango is tough to diagnose, or on any vehicle for that matter as there are so many different things that could be causing the no start. But with the help of the check engine light and a good code reader, we should be in business. When it comes to diagnosing engine problems, the check engine light can be your friend. All you need is a good code reader, a little knowledge and alot of determination.

Dodge Durango P0706

So we Pulled the Durango in and hooked the scan tool to it and found that trouble code P0706 for the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) was present. So that means that the check engine light was set. Now, just because we pulled the P0706 trouble code from our Durango and it tells us that there is an issue with the TRS, it does not necessarily mean that the TRS is our problem. It is only a starting point, and it tells where to start our tests.

Here is the full specs on the vehicle: VEHICLE: 2004 Dodge Durango Limited 5.7L, V8, MFI, OHV, VIN D, Eng Desg -

MILEAGE: 95000

And since we Pulled the transmission range sensor code from our Durango, these are the tests that we started with:

Dodge Durango P0706 Diagnostics test

Tests:

1. Backprobe the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) C3 connector pin 21 with a 12 volt test light clipped onto the battery positive cable.

2. The test light should stay lit when the shift lever is in park or neutral.

3. Try to crank the engine over. If it clicks and the test light goes out check for a poor ground on the block from the battery. An easy test is to run a booster cable from the block to the battery negative terminal and see if the engine will crank over and start.

Confirmed Fix for the Dodge Durango P0706

Potential Causes:

Transmission Range Sensor (TRS)

Battery Ground Cable

Confirmed Fix:

Repaired the Battery Ground Cable: The starter would click, get power for a second and then the relay would lose it's ground. The TRS supplies a ground to the PCM to tell it that it's in Park or Neutral. The range sensor had a ground when tested with a volt meter and a test light but when the starter engaged it would lose its ground due to the heavy current draw. This was found by putting a jumper cable from the battery negative to the engine block.

Tech Tips:

If TRS codes set and the engine will not crank over, check the main ground on the engine block. The TRS is internally grounded to the transmission.
